Who Was St George?

St George was a brave Roman soldier from the third century who became a Christian martyr after refusing to give up his faith. According to the legendary tale, he famously slew a fierce dragon that was terrorising a town in Libya, saving a princess and the local people in the process. His courage and heroism made him a symbol of bravery and chivalry. By the 14th century, he had been named patron saint of England, and his iconic red cross on a white background became our national flag – the St George’s Cross. Organisers plan for the colourful parade to wind its way across the bridge, through the Orchards Shopping Centre, along the High Street and Market Street, before finishing at the bandstand in Central Park. The event is free to watch and provides an opportunity for children to learn about the dragon-slaying legend.

Today in Gravesend (Thursday 23 April)

Gravesham is also celebrating with entertainment in the town centre starting from 9:45am. The schools parade and flag-raising ceremony runs from 10:30am to 11:30am, featuring marching bands, St George, and dragon-themed activities. It’s a free event in the heart of town, suitable for families to enjoy the atmosphere.

This Saturday in Sheerness (25 April)

Beachfields Park will host Sheerness Town Council’s free St George’s Day family celebration from 11am to 3pm. Activities include circus workshops, Punch & Judy shows, live music from the Medway Concert Brass Band, a funfair, balloon art, a penalty shootout challenge, sword and shield making for children, and children’s entertainers. Charity stalls and additional activities are planned. Entry is free.

This Saturday in Sandwich (25 April)

The Sandwich Medieval Centre on The Quay will host St George Folk Day from 11am to 6pm. With free entry, the historic celebration features pop-up exhibitions, folk activities, and medieval England experiences.
