Hand Tattoo Leads to Arrest of Knife-Wielding Robber in Gillingham
A distinctive hand tattoo helped officers identify and arrest an armed teenager responsible for multiple robberies targeting young victims in the Medway area.
A dangerous robber who targeted teenage boys with a knife has been brought to justice after his distinctive hand tattoo proved crucial to his identification and arrest.
Cameron Joseph, 18, from Balmoral Road in Gillingham, committed two armed robberies within a week in February 2025. On 10 February, Joseph approached two teenage boys on Brompton Road in Gillingham, initially offering to buy one of their Canada Goose jackets. When the boys attempted to leave, Joseph ushered one of them into a nearby alleyway, where he displayed a knife concealed in his waistband. He became aggressive and stole the victim’s jacket and AirPods before fleeing the scene.
Just six days later, on 16 February, Joseph followed another teenage boy in the Brompton area. Upon asking for the victim’s bag, the boy refused. Joseph then threatened to stab him and produced a knife from his jacket pocket. Fearing for his safety, the victim handed over his belongings and left the scene.
Swift Identification and Arrest
Officers working on the case used the descriptions provided by victims to identify Joseph. The distinctive tattoo on his hand proved instrumental in tracking him down. Detectives located Joseph in Gravesend on 20 February, and he was apprehended following a foot chase. When caught, officers discovered Joseph was wearing the stolen jacket and carrying the bag he had taken from his victims.
Joseph was subsequently charged with two counts of robbery and two counts of possessing a bladed weapon in a public place. He appeared at Maidstone Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.
Sentencing and Justice
The court handed Joseph an extended sentence of seven years and three months, with an initial custodial period of four years and three months. Upon becoming eligible for parole, he will be required to serve a further three years on licence.
Detective Sergeant Richard Taylor of Kent Police commented on the case, stating: “This criminal chose to rob teenagers travelling from school and stole expensive clothing which he continued to wear afterwards. Threatening young victims with a knife is despicable, but the descriptions provided by his victims allowed officers to track him down. He is now quite rightly starting a prison sentence and Medway is certainly a safer place in his absence.”
